CES Set To Take Over Las Vegas
CES, the annual Consumer Electronics Show, stands ready to take over Las Vegas once again this month, as a huge number of people will flock to the event to check out the latest gadgets and consumer technology devices. More than 130,000 people will be attending the Las Vegas based show this year, and many companies are running satellite events which will be hosted at casino hotels around the strip. The show is the highlight of the consumer tech calendar every year, and Gary Shapiro, head of the Consumer Electronics Association, said It will be a bright spot compared to the uncertainty in the rest of the economy. Attendance is down slightly on the 2008 figures, but Mr Shapiro said that the association was overall pleased with the figures, since they had held fairly steady in spite of the troubled economy this year. The show will feature more than 2,700 companies showing off their products, with booths covering more than 1.7m square feet of floor space.The exhibition will open with a keynote speech from Microsofts Steve Balmer. This year, the overall theme of CES is expected to be Internet on The Go, with organic LED screens, mobile internet devices, and 3D TV and film technologies expected to be in abundance.

Hurricane Irene followed in the path of Hurricane Katrina when it came to devastating casinos in the US. The casinos is the most profitable in the city, and executives believe that if not for the hurricane, the Borgata may have shown an improvement over the previous year in the third quarter. They are hoping the pre-storm attendance at the Borgata becomes the norm.”There are reasons to be optimistic,” said Boyd Gaming CEO Keith Smith. Boyd Gaming owns half of the Borgata, and runs several other casinos around the US. The company claims that net revenue at the Borgata for the third quarter was $202 million, down almost three percent. The earnings and revenue were both expected to increase had it not been for the storm.On the year, the Borgata has revenue of $492.4 million. That figure is down just over one percent from the first nine months of 2010. The US casino industry as a whole has been down since the recession, although many states have expanded their gaming industries in recent years. The competition from neighboring states has caused New jersey casinos to rebound slower than some other gaming destinations in the country.
