Since taking office, Emanuel has held press conferences, and appeared in many television and print interviews where he voiced his displeasure over Quinn’s stalling in signing the bill that has been proposed.In its current form, the legislation would bring five new gaming facilities to Illinois. The governor has said several times earlier this year that he would veto any such attempt to broadly expand casino gambling. The governor has backed off the veto talk lately, but still maintains that in its current form, he would be more likely to veto than sign the bill. Quinn wants a compromise on the scope of gambling that will come from any new gaming legislation.The Aldermen took turns on Thursday giving reasons why Quinn should pass the bill. Most of the comments centered on the idea that the city needs the money not only for the economy, but also for important improvements that need to be made within its city limits.”This is not a tax increase,” said Alderman Ray Suarez. “Give Chicago a chance to have a casino. Give Chicago a chance to use that money on infrastructure, which is badly needed.”Emanuel, while fighting for the right to have a casino in Chicago, repeatedly has said that the casino would not be his first choice of ways to bring revenue to the city budget. The former Obama Administration lawmaker, however, has maintained that a casino is the solution that is on the table, and it would provide immediate relief.
