New Jersey lawmakers have been searching for ways to help their ailing casino industry for several years, and one of the solutions that regulators in Atlantic City have come up with is adding gambling in areas that had previously been reserved for entertainment.Regulators have given their approval to place gambling tables and slots in lounges, by the pool, and at the counter-tops of bars within the casino resorts in Atlantic City. In addition, the casinos will offer alcohol to patrons of Internet lounges and gift shops.The hope is that the casinos will be able to attract gamblers that decide to spend the day out by the pool or at the nightclubs in the evening. Gamblers have learned over the past decade how to multi-task, and that has led to casinos figuring out ways to offer gambling in places where the fun never stops. Several AC casinos have already taken advantage of the new rules.The Pool is one of the most popular night spots in Atlantic City. Harrah’s is expected to add table games to the area, with the hope of packing the tables with vacationers. The casino is experimenting with the additional table games and believes they could help bring the city out of its revenue slump.”It’s combining casino gambling and the nightclub atmosphere,” said Don Marradino, President of the Eastern Division of Caesars Entertainment. “It’s a fun atmosphere. We’re really pleased with how it’s working out. We’re sticking our toe in the water, and seeing how it works out.”Atlantic City has fallen behind Pennsylvania when it comes to gaming innovation, and by the end of the year, analysts predict that Pennsylvania casinos will bring in more revenue than their New Jersey counterparts. That is a frightening scenario for the eleven casino owners in a city that has long been considered the second largest gaming market in the US behind Las Vegas.Online gambling and sports betting may be the biggest keys to turning around the fate of the AC casinos. Senator Raymond Lesniak is pushing legislation that would regulate sports books at the casino.
